Join Rochester Cathedral Voluntary Choir

There are sometimes vacancies in this mixed adult choir for competent singers aged 18 and over.

(This minimum age limit may occasionally be waived for ex-choristers who wish to continue singing in the Cathedral.)

Applicants should be good sight-readers, preferably with previous experience of Anglican church music, and prepared to commit to attending the majority of scheduled choir dates during the year (exceptions to this rule are sometimes negotiable, depending on your personal circumstances; please ask).

Former boy and girl choristers, choral scholars, lay clerks, etc, are particularly welcome, as well as others wishing to gain more experience of this repertoire.

The choir maintains a varied schedule of services in the cathedral throughout the year, but there is no commitment to regular weekly rehearsals.

In addition to our duties in the cathedral there are concerts and services elsewhere in the Diocese and beyond, and foreign tours (four to the USA and five to Germany already); our last tour to America was to Washington State in April 2010 (including an unscheduled extra week in Canada, due to the Icelandic volcano eruption), and our most recent tour to Germany was in August 2015, which included services in Aachen Cathedral and collegiate and abbey churches in the Mosel Valley.

Auditions

All applicants for membership of the Cathedral Voluntary Choir will be auditioned, unless they sing regularly as a Choral Scholar or Deputy Lay Clerk in the Cathedral Choir, or have served as a Boy or Girl Chorister in the Cathedral.

The audition process will consist of:

  • A short prepared piece (not necessary for former members of the Special Choir).

  • Scales, arpeggios and sustaining a note.

  • One or two excerpts from our repertoire to test sight-reading.

  • A portion of psalmody (to Anglican chant).

  • Discussion of any questions or concerns that you, or we, may have.

For more information about the choir, or to arrange an audition, please contact the choir’s Director, Douglas Henn-Macrae:
