Events and services photo album

An album in the Chapter Library featuring photos of events and services from the twentieth century is a chronicle of the lifes and times of the Cathedral.

Established shortly after the Second World War, the Events and Services Photo Album in the Chapter Library was updated until the 1960s. Included on the first page as a ‘flashback’ is a photo of the royal visit by Queen Mary in May 1936. The collection includes many civic services and parades of the local Royal Engineers, Scouts, Brownies, and the laying up of the regimental colours of the Royal Marines.

Photos of events of services from the late 1970s have yet to be added to an album. Other collections of twentieth-century photographs of the Cathedral include a series of 1940s photos featured on the Historic England Viewfinder, and a series of glass slides preserved in the Chapter Library.
