Dean of Rochester to Retire

The Dean of Rochester, the Very Reverend Dr Philip Hesketh DL, is to retire early on medical advice after 22 years of service to Rochester Cathedral. During his time as Dean, he has helped transform the Cathedral’s outreach, inclusiveness and visitor experience, leaving it well placed for the future.

“It has been a privilege to have played a small part in the Cathedral’s long history, and it has been a difficult decision to stand down. I remain deeply grateful to everyone who has supported and encouraged me during my time at the Cathedral,” said the Dean.

During his tenure, the Cathedral has undergone significant change and development. Having successfully navigated two previous Heritage Lottery Fund-supported projects, the Cathedral has now secured initial funding for a third project, Sacred Stones, Shared Stories. This initiative aims to protect and conserve the ancient medieval cloister in the Cathedral Garth while enhancing the experience of visitors.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, Dean Philip has championed health and wellbeing as an important part of the Cathedral’s ministry, opening up its gardens and green spaces to the wider community.

“Human flourishing is a fundamental part of the Christian gospel. Jesus promises life in all its fullness, encompassing body, mind and spirit,” said Dean Philip.

The opening of a Community Wellbeing Garden, alongside the development of music and garden therapies, represents a significant expansion of the Cathedral’s community outreach programme.

“Although it is hard to let go at such an exciting time, it is important to recognise the changing seasons of our lives and the need to lay things down in order to allow new growth,” he added.

Philip and his wife, Sugina, intend to remain in Kent and hope to continue serving the Church, the Community and the County.

Dean Philip’s final service at Rochester Cathedral will take place at 3.15 pm on Sunday 31 January 2027. All are warmly invited to attend.
