Charlie Oscar Patterson

Charlie Oscar Patterson is a Medway based British artist whose practice moves between painting, sculpture and installation. Drawing on modernist painting, minimalism and abstraction, he treats the canvas as a physical object: shaped supports, dense layers of oil paint and precisely controlled colour change as viewers move and the light shifts.

Patterson describes his works as instruments that "play" light, with rhythm and shadow as important as hue. His practice is experiential, placing the viewer in the same space as the work rather than asking for a single, fixed view point. Selected solo exhibitions include Late Night Karaoke at Duran Mashaal Gallery, Montreal (2023); Hello World at Union Gallery, London (2022);Abundance at Duran Mashaal Gallery, Montreal (2020); and Lisztomania at Protein Studios, London (2019). His work has also been presented at Expo Chicago, Art Busan, Art Toronto, NOW Gallery and exhibitions in Cologne and London.

For Art on the Delta, Patterson extends his colour-led language into new large-scale figurative paintings made in response to Rochester Cathedral's Nave. Across these works, painting becomes architectural and human: humour, colour, scale, surface and changing natural light combine to create an encounter that unfolds as visitors move through the building
