Morrell Thurston (d. 1747)


A memorial to Morell Thurston is located on the east wall of the south nave transept.

Mural monument of white marble, consisting of a tablet with a gilded border and a semi-circular top, within which is a printed heraldic cartouche. Latin inscription referring to the virtues of Morrell Thurston who died 18th February 1747. The monument was placed by his niece Maria Franckwell.

Incised Roman and Italic letters, coloured black.

Translation

Beside the remains of his parents, Below (this Stone) lies Morellus Thurstone Although allowed to lie here, his excellent intellectual gifts, obvious to all. For through the decency of his life, through the dauntlessness of his Faith, through the simplicity of his habits, through his piety in no way stained, He, though unwilling shone out to all, a guardian of true virtue and its doughty servant. He died unmarried on the 18th February 1747. Maria Franckwell, for her uncle who deserved so very well, through her very dear sister Sarah, set up this marble.
