Wolf Howard

Wolf Howard (b. 1968) is a painter, poet, filmmaker and musician born in Strood, Medway. At sixteen he crossed the bridge into Rochester and became part of the area's network of artists and musicians. He has played drums with bands including The James Taylor Quartet, The Solarflares and Billy Childish and the Buff Medways, while developing a distinctive visual practice of his own. In 1999 Howard became a founding member of the Stuckist art movement.

His paintings are bold, figurative and heavily worked, often built through vigorous impasto before being scraped back,revised and layered again. The resulting surfaces combine directness, humour, unease and emotional honesty, resisting a polished finish in favour of the visible energy of making.

Howard has exhibited with the Stuckists internationally and was included in The Stuckists Punk Victorian at the Walker Art Gallery during the 2004 Liverpool Biennial. He has also published several books of poetry and continues to work across painting, photography, film and music. In Art on the Delta, Howard brings an important strand of Medway's counter-cultural art history into conversation with the Cathedral while remaining resolutely present-tense: close looking reveals surface, gesture, revision and human vulnerability.
